Offline-first architecture

Dinner rush, still ringing

WiFi drops mid-service. The router restarts. Your internet goes dark for two minutes. The till doesn't care — it runs from its own on-device database, so three more tables pay, orders print to the kitchen, and when connectivity returns everything reconciles automatically. Your guests never see a system down screen.

  • No "offline mode" to activate — it just works
  • Orders, tickets, and receipts all continue
  • Syncs in the background when connection returns

Animation: WiFi connected, then drops. Three orders land while offline. Connection restores and orders sync automatically.

Restaurant POS FAQ

How much does restaurant POS software cost?

Budy is one flat plan: every feature free for the first two months, then USD 98 per location per month. No setup fees, no per-device licenses, no per-transaction cuts. You own your hardware — any Android tablet, iPad, or Windows PC works. Compare that to Toast or Square, which can run $300-500/month per location before hardware, plus transaction fees.

What features does a restaurant POS need?

The essentials used every shift: modifiers and variants (size, protein, sides, toppings), inventory tracking per ingredient, multi-location support for small chains, offline reliability when WiFi drops, receipt and kitchen printing, member loyalty, and consolidated reporting. Budy includes all of that in the base price. We do not process card payments — you bring your own payment terminal or processor.

Does Budy handle complex menu items with modifiers?

Yes. Variants handle size, portion, or base choice (small/medium/large, chicken/beef/tofu). Modifiers handle add-ons and customizations (extra cheese, no onions, side substitutions). Each modifier can adjust price and track its own inventory. Works for cafés, fast-casual, and full-service restaurants.

Can Budy run multiple restaurant locations?

Yes. One Budy tenant manages multiple locations — shared menu and pricing, per-location inventory counts, and back-office reporting you can view per site or consolidated across all locations. Each site syncs in real time and keeps selling offline from its own local data.

What hardware do I need to run Budy at my restaurant?

Any Android tablet (SUNMI devices work great for high-volume), iPad, or Windows PC. Add Bluetooth receipt printers (Niimbot for small cafés, Epson or Star for full kitchens). Optional: customer-facing display for menu boards (Budy TV), Bluetooth scale for portioning (Acaia). No proprietary terminals required.

Does Budy work offline when internet drops?

Yes. Offline-first architecture: the POS runs from an on-device database and syncs when connectivity returns. Your restaurant keeps selling during WiFi outages, internet failures, or poor cell signal. Common for lunch rushes when bandwidth gets hammered.

Is Budy a cheaper alternative to Toast or Square?

On base price, yes — Budy is $98/month per location with every feature included, versus Toast or Square at $300-500+/month before hardware and transaction fees. Budy does not process payments, so you bring your own card terminal or payment processor. The tradeoff: simpler, more control, lower cost, but you handle the payment integration yourself. Best for independent restaurants and small chains that want flexibility without platform lock-in.

Does Budy have table management, kitchen display, and online ordering?

Partial. Budy handles modifiers, variants, tickets, and inventory tracking. Kitchen printing to receipt printers works; a full graphical kitchen display system (KDS) is on the roadmap but not live yet. Table management for full-service dining is also on the roadmap. Online ordering: the Budy web shop (in beta) gives you a branded ordering page, but it is not DoorDash or UberEats native — customers order directly from your site. If you need full table management and native third-party delivery today, Toast or Square might fit better. Budy is best for fast-casual, cafés, counter-service, and independent restaurants that want core POS features without the bloat.

Can I try Budy before committing?

Yes. Every feature is free for the first two months. Download the app, import your menu via AI or CSV, connect a receipt printer if you have one, and start taking orders. No credit card required for the trial.
